As someone attempting to cull about 100 albums from my collection I can really feel this. I get dropping $50 on one of these albums if they are a favorite but these types of albums used to be stuff you pick up for like $5 from the used record bin at your local on a whim because they had a cool cover and then were pleasantly surprised by the funkiness of the grooves. I’d rather dedicate the $50 (and the space) towards something spin a little more often.I like all of these, but...how many Soul Jazz albums does one need?

That being said, I am completely unfamiliar with these titles and I will download/stream these titles for sure. I appreciate the curation just not enough to purchase any more while still have like 20+ similar titles sitting on my record shelf.
Guilty. As. Charged. We should have a game where members here are played a track from one of the 20 Tone Poets they bought this year and see if they can even name the album it's on
Hey I resemble that remarkWe should have a game where members here are played a track from one of the 20 Tone Poets they bought this year and see if they can even name the album it's on
JFC just tag me next time, damnWe should have a game where members here are played a track from one of the 20 Tone Poets they bought this year and see if they can even name the album it's on
I'm fairly certain that unless it's Chet Baker Sings I couldn't even name the artist. We should have a game where members here are played a track from one of the 20 Tone Poets they bought this year and see if they can even name the album it's on.
I think they have given them great titles. If they are doing Prestige 1970's, these are among the best. The first round was a great mix of stone classics and more out there stuff, this round I think is better. I bought all 4, instantly. Skipped the tote bag though.Concord isn't gonna give VMP the best of the best as exclusives IMO. But if you like any of these titles, most of them haven't had reissues in 30+ years. I kinda like that they are lesser known titles.
Almost a certainty that I would guess 30% correct or worse on a run of ten.We should have a game where members here are played a track from one of the 20 Tone Poets they bought this year and see if they can even name the album it's on
Yeah, I think the regulars are up to $30. I just wish there was a bundle discount!I think they have given them great titles. If they are doing Prestige 1970's, these are among the best. And yes, $45 each is a bit rich, but not extravagantly so, given that prices are up across the board. There won't be new regular Jazz Dispensary titles at $25 ever again (unless George W. Bush gets re-elected and bombs Russia back to the stone age).
There should have been. Or at least the silly tote bag should have been free when purchasing all 4.Yeah, I think the regulars are up to $30. I just wish there was a bundle discount!
I feel this. I was spinning the Joe Jones Classics release the other day and was thinking “I like this… but did I really need to have it in my collection?”I like all of these, but...how many Soul Jazz albums does one need? These all seem like they are an 8/10 musically, so very good, but not transcendent. Why would I play one of these over the other Idris Muhammad album I have, or Jimmy Smith, or Charles Kynard, or some of the other Jazz Dispensary albums I have. I can't believe I'm typing this, but it kinda feel like I've reached my saturation point on the genre.
I personally prefer most of the non-exclusive jazz dispensary titles that have been released. The Elements is better than any of the VMP titles and I love that Kynard as well as the Gary Bartz NTU troop. Don’t love the Bayete. Agree that overall this round is better though. And I’ll pick up one or two in swaps if they ever make it there.I think they have given them great titles. If they are doing Prestige 1970's, these are among the best. Which two did you get?Different strokes for different folks? Some people get excited about soul jazz, other people are into... I dunno, Cake? Buying multiple copies of the same classic rock albums over and over again?
If it's not for you, it's not for you and by all means, don't buy them, but I'm personally kind of thrilled to get the two of these I wanted as AAA reissues for half what they typically change hands for as originals. VMP definitely makes some odd choices at times, but the Jazz Dispensary albums they've done have generally been pretty great.
