Vinyl Me Please (store, exclusives, swaps, etc)

Or alternatively people will be all over this shit because their overwhelming need for completely pointless stuff is greater than their ability to rationally realise they’re about to spend $160 on a load of old toss.

And in the process they’ll normalise the price point so we’re all forced into it. Not unlike what’s happened with the general market. It used to be about listening to good tunes on a less than perfect (or efficient) medium. Now it seems like it’s become some fetishists wet dream with an internet full of fappers fapping madly over the next limited colour press while the old school listeners get priced out the market or have to buy bigger shelves to accommodate the additional shit that’s being shoved in a record box.

You mean the cardboard oasis binoculars in my Knebworth box set or the “roll with with it” Rizzla’s in my Morning Glory box set aren’t totally useful additions...

Always handy to have a pack of rizlas handy. You could use the album cover as a roach too. Sounds mega practical to me

To produce one box like this is already something. Now two? Maybe they could have included the slipmats in the box to justify the price?

it's a collectibles release, which is what I sorta feared when the Mondo guys came along. don't doubt we are gonna see more of these kinds of things but hopefully at a lower price if there are any releases i'd actually want.

these do include slipmats though...right? seems like it includes a handbag/purse, LP, picture disc, flexidisc, slipmat and a buncha other stuff. not for me, but i can definitely see this selling pretty decently for them and getting a new subscriber base out of it. it's one of the biggest movies of the year. they just should have gotten this out months ago and it would have sold better.

At the end of the day my thoughts on these boxes are this:

I liked the movie, I thought it was really well done. These boxes are a neat gift idea for people who REALLY liked the movie and its soundtrack. I have zero problems with it existing, and it is indeed overpriced, but hey: I just saw some cool John Wick action figures being produced for like $350 USD a pop - the collectable market is insane and you couple that with VMP pricing and of course it's that much.

EDIT: Sorry they're $384 CAD + I assume shipping.

yea as long as everything they do doesn't turn into "collectibles" then who cares about this release. i get that this is for people who are not me. and it makes sense considering bringing the Mondo guys on that VMP will start to try to hit the collectibles market with soundtrack releases like this.

i sort of have a feeling that the collectibles market for records might fade soon but we'll see. tons of stuff that stores couldn't keep in stock during the pandemic are being price slashed across the board.

Genuinely gutted when I saw the price. Was about to get all over this. Now it’s a sleep on it for a night and see how I feel tomorrow job.

It’s not a million miles away from the cheapest I’ve seen the revolver box going for. In todays market it actually just about might be about right.

Same, I love Alicia Keys and love this album. Just can't spend that money on it. Soon in swaps I suppose?

The last movie score I NEEDED to own was the MOV Interstellar.
I can probably count on one hand the amount of movie soundtracks that I'll spin more than a couple of times (think those are like Trainspotting, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Graduate and Tough Guys). Outside of Superfly, Virgin Suicides and maybe Shaft there's probably not many I have still yet to snag.

Soundtracks are not for me and even at a reasonable cost I'd be unlikely to dip into this.

Me looking at these crazy ass VMP prices lately.

theres a wide release as well that I think is 2LPs. packaging on the VMP looks sick but price is way too much for me. here's one at UO:

i know may not help you in the UK....but i assume this 2LP version will be available to you.

Yeah. I doubt even at my most persuasive I’ll be able to justify this to myself. 2LP will have to do

This reminds me a bit of the trading card “collectible” market in the later stages. Sports cards initially became collectible due to scarcity but as cards became a popular collectible and more cards were produced and people took better care because of the potential value cratered so they started producing manufactured scarcity by first making rare card series of limited quantities but eventually over time those cards barely held value either. Now they are at a point where they are offering cards with pieces game worn jerseys, etc

It’s trading cards are not something that people trade anymore and are now almost exclusively collectible items. vinyl releases like this are designed with much of the same idea behind it. It’s can be played but it’s more designed to look nice on shelf.

That is fine for the most part as long as they are still making records that are meant to be enjoyed which for now still seems to be the case.

Also, maximizing the prices for this type of release takes a big night out of secondary market resale value. I am sure some people will try to flip these but at this price point the flipping margins become a lot slimmer and likely less appealing. More money in VMP pockets.
