Vinyl Me Please (store, exclusives, swaps, etc)

Also probably means Sony has no interest in leasing catalog to VMP unless the price is right. VMP is an "expensive reissue label", ironic if they labeled a competitor that way during the session.

Granted this was 2017-18, so their process has likely changed, when my friend went to Sony about wanting to do a vinyl press of something from their archives/vault (band in question had signed with Capricorn in the mid-90s), they initially just wanted the band or label to pay a fee but then Sony would actually do the pressing & jacket manufacturing and handle the release. Once they realized someone else would do all that, they still asked for a licensing fee & also essentially dictated the minimum price to consumers. It wasn't incredibly pricey, but for a defunct band, still meant asking people to pay $10 more for a 2x LP than what the label had charged before.

Yea--that's the music direct catalogue. MoFi has done tons of Miles reissues. I hadn't seen anywhere that Sony is a part owner of MoFi now though--that was the interesting tidbit for me. Someone elsewhere was commenting the other day that MoFi was doing Sony titles so why couldn't VMP or other labels. It's all making sense now though.

MoFi electronics have been around for awhile now too. I have their Ultradeck turntable and love it. They seem to be pushing toward higher end stuff now as their "lower end" equipment is mostly getting discontinued. I think some people here have their speakers too and like them
VMP is no different than MOFI - neither get Sony owned tapes. Nobody does.

VMP has done plenty of Sony in recent times, such as the Miles set done from 1-1 master tape copies. MOFI prefer to do DSD transfers, which are done at the Sony facility. DSD transfers are much cheaper than tape copies.

Sony is not inaccessible to license from. They do tend to hold on to tier 1 and tier 2 titles, though.

not just VMP-- most other reissue labels. Sony was already being stingy with tapes and I wonder if the MoFi connection is a new-ish detail now that MoFi have a pressing plant.

in the grand scheme of things, VMP is middle to upper tier reissue label price-wise. the new exclusives are around $40-$45 for members, which puts them in AP/MoFi/Impex single LP territory. Not talking about quality, simply price. I'm guessing "Expensive reissue" is something along the lines of a 1 step which makes me think it will be a Craft Small Batch title. Or a UHQR.

The "expensive" comment was also verbatim from someone else who watched it before y'all come out with the pitchforks hah

MoFi have historically always done a lot of Columbia releases. It wouldn’t surprise me if this was quite a long standing thing.

Not a shock to me. Less money for the artist I’d assume with way less copies made. Probably tried to negotiate open preorder instead of a 10k essentials run. We already heard that some bands wanted to be in essentials and not the rock track. Or wouldn’t do a store exclusive and would only license for essentials.
It just speaks of how next to impossible getting anything of note for the tracks going forward.

They don't have anything of note now though. At least not if you were a member for a bit of a stretch prior to The Great Bin Off of 2024.

I went to cancel my Nonesuch orders the other night but as most was in credit thought I'd see if there was actually anything I'd take. As the Broadcasts aren't up yet for internationals it was a rock hard solid no. I can't see how as a company that are anything other than totally goosed at this point.

I think they have a decent amount of newer subscribers who are happy to get back catalogue stuff or don’t understand how membership will be from this point forward. For long standing members, there’s likely nothing left.

For me there’s still stuff that I sort of want (or I have been staring at for months or years and am simply curious about).

Like sure it’d be fun to have the second Alan Jackson album they did, the Gus Cannon, or a fifth Dolly Parton album. But I’d probably only pay $10-15 for the privilege. Which means even with a 40% sale I’d probably still pass on most of it.

That’s my issue. I’m kinda curious about the Abdul Malik and Teo albums but not $45 plus shipping curious. If they were in a shop in the uk I’d walk straight past without an issue.

The only things I’m remotely interested in are the broadcasts… which I already have on CD anyway

That was one of the fun things about the club in the beginning, stuff was relatively cheap and would go on sale if it hung around. It allowed me to take more chances which in turn allowed them to be able to be more adventurous. Now, I have to know it’s a record I love, that is either impossible to get anywhere else or that the quality is so high that I am getting the best pressing available. If that criteria doesn’t apply, then I can find something more worthwhile to spend that money on.

At full price plus shipping, it’s got to be grail status and since they did the only real grail I had... and even if I did have any grails left… My Stakes is High ain’t a VMP pressing…

i'm out of the loop all things VMP i just now discovered they quit doing their records of the month (tracks) format.from the brief research i've done it's more of a curation service now.do ya think this will actually work out well for them?

This was me when I kicked around that Creem deal to return to this shit show, but I was like I’m getting 3 albums I’d only pay 10-15 bucks for and then what would the other 6 be? And if ANOHNI is too big for VMP (no shade intended), what would I be getting with those other 6 records for around $200ish in expected value.
