November Acquisitions

Current year pickups:

Circuit Des Yeux - -io
Eluvium - Virga II
Genesis Owusu - Smiling With no Teeth
Marissa Nadler - The Path of the Clouds

20211130_232357.jpg

First time listening to Haley Fohr's (Circuit Des Yeux) art this year and I am hooked. Deep, solemn vocals entrenched in dark classical, brooding, and occasionally dissonant backdrops. Highly recommended for fans of Lingua Ignota, Jarboe, and Anna Von Hausswolff. Be warned...Haley's vocals are perhaps the most difficult to come to terms with and appreciate within this neoclassical world of similar artists.
Figured getting the newest Eluvium set of tape loops + drones in Virga II. Looking forward to the third and final installment when it comes.
Genesis Owusu's debut LP is still one of my top10 of this year. Pretty daring and unique, definitely a grower from Q1.
She's had a consistent discography, despite a small slip-up from For My Crimes. Marissa's newest LP is a return to form. The instrumentals sound more full-bodied on The Path of the Clouds in comparison to her past works. Brooding singer/songwriter tunes, just the way I like 'em.

Miscellaneous pickups:

Lauren Bousfield - Palimpsest
Chance the Rapper - Coloring Book
Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Prince - Purple Rain

20211130_232013.jpg

Lauren Bousfield is a glitch/experimental artist that was a recommendation last year by someone on the forum. Saw it for $12 (after discount) from SoundOfVinyl and took a flyer on it. Music seemed interesting enough.
Got in on the Chance restocks and picked up Coloring Book, though I might (and probably will) gift this away to my friend for Christmas. Sadly arrived with a seam split and bent upper-right corner. Contacted two different customer service email addresses with no response (one is nonexistent).
Neutral Milk Hotel was a $10 cheapie from the recent Target sale, the only item I bought from the sale believe it or not. Arrived with massive seam split up top, so put in a replacement request only to find that it was out of stock. Got a refund without needing to return.
Happy to see the Purple Rain exclusive turned out well; gorgeous in fact. Sounds wonderful.

SRSQ - Unreality
Swans - Soundtracks for the Blind
The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico
yeule - Serotonin II

20211130_230215.jpg

More brooding neoclassical music added to the library with this rather beguiling and beautifully performed record by SRSQ. Very under the radar.
Happy to hear about the reissue for the Swans post-rock seminal piece, and switched my preorder to Young God's website after seeing that Michael Gira would be signing them (on the back, though).
Haven't listened to this half-speed mastered classic from VU yet, but I have only heard good things. Snatched for $21 in the SoundOfVinyl sale, surely a good price.
Excited to see yeule next year. Cyberpop/ambient pop/ethereal pop that bears euphoric textures unlike anything I've tried to compare it to (in similar subgenres) in recent years.

November grabs (before all the Target/SOV/UD deluge):

First, the cheapies. The White Denim was an Amazon warehouse grab and had the honor of being the first record I ever received in a plastic bag. Fortunately the record itself is in fine shape. The others came from my local, including a $1 Tinderbox (late 80s repress).

All Them Witches was my sole RSD grab, but I also picked up a used Never Say Die at the same time. Sister is a replacement copy for my noisy Brazilian OG; hopefully SY will repress Goo soon. The jazz albums came from @RowBearToe, Money Jungle also being a replacement for my OG copy (which I will keep, despite it being in pitiful shape).

Last but not least, probably my favorite music grab of the month was The Cure’s 4-CD b-sides box set (which doesn’t exist on vinyl). Tons of essential tracks if you’re a big fan of the band.

I'm going to try and get a replacement put in for my SftB today, could you tell me of any weirdness when you get around to listening to it.

Where did you score the Genesis Owusu? I've been looking for that one.

Blake Mills - Blake Mills
The Posies - Frosting On The Beater
Yo La Tengo - Popular Songs
Radiohead - KID A MNESIA
Neil Young - Live at Massey Hall 1971
Steve Reich - Music For 18 Musicians
Modest Mouse - The Golden Casket
The Beatles - Let It Be
Nirvana - Nevermind
Foo Fighters - The Colour And The Shape
Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard Of Ozz
D'Angelo - Black Messiah
R.E.M. - Fables Of The Reconstruction
MF Doom - Operation: Doomsday
Various Artists - The Life Aquatic Soundtrack
Little Feat - Electrif Lycanthrope Live At Ultra-Sonic Studios, 1974
The Wrens - Secaucus
Charles Mingus - The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady
Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue
El-P - I'll Sleep When You're Dead
Monster Rally - Mystery Cove

Lots of good deals in this stack plus some fantastic PIFs. Nevermind and KID A MNESIA we two of the biggest reissues Radiohead pressing was a little disappointing but my expectations were were probably just too high. Nevermind sounds great… but the Bernie Grundman Pallas version is just a bit better overall. I ended swapping out the jackets since the new 30th anniversary tip-on gatefold is much nicer. A trip to my local record store added me Operation: Doomday, Fables Of The Reconstruction, and Acid Tongue filling out their respective discographies. Then another stop by my local on Record Store Day Black Friday nabbed me Life Aquatic, Little Feat, & The Wrens. The only other album I was really excited to pick up was Live At Massey Hall 1970 I didn’t need another acoustic live Neil Young album from the early 1970s but when they done this well it’s really hard to pass up.

Uh, I was actually just getting finished listening to Soundtracks for the Blind as I was typing this and Side 7 has a REALLY WEIRD defect that makes it sound like there's static in the left channel that follows the dynamica of the music. Probably going to have to requeat a replacement. It happens on multiple turntables so...

So indeed. I tried bringing it to the shop yesterday and the owner wasn't there, and the dude who was wasn't comfortable refunding or replacing without him, especially since I didn't have my reciept. Fair enough. I had been going to try again this weekend, but now, when I added a note about this to my review on Discogs one HibiTongs pointed out that people were complaining of this issue in the reviews of the 2018 box set. Thusly I'm going to keep the one I have until I see someone confirm theirs doesn't have the issue of left-channel static on "YRP" and "Fan's Lament." I'm also curious how the EU press is now but it wasn't repressed and I doubt I'd go through the expense even if it was. And to be kind, it's probably not going to stop me listening since it otherwise sounds excellent and it's not o f f c e n t e r.
