Hot Take/ Musical Confession Thread!

J Cole is so boring
I couldn’t agree more. J. Cole is very boring and has never come close to releasing a great album in my opinion. I only love three songs by him - 1985, Neighbors & False Prophets.

I understand why J. Cole is very popular. I understand the appeal. But I think J Cole is a boring musician who has little creativity in his music. J Cole is too predictable.

Since I posted about Kendrick earlier, for those who do like his music can you say exactly what you like about him because I really don't get it ...
Yeah that’s basically what I asked early on too. I think @NathanRicaud said he wrote a thing about To Pimp a Butterfly at the old place but didn’t have the energy to recreate that right now. I’m looking forward to reading it when he does!

My guess, based off nothing really, is that there was a trend in rap for a rapper to (1) represent how hardcore they were (2) how rich they were (3) preferably both OR it was light pop, heavily produced material from and/or for middle class suburbanites (I’m thinking Drake and Kanye here). MAYBE Kendrick Lamar was utilizing this interesting samples style but merging it with more politically conscious or at least more interesting subject matter than how much money he had or how many people he killed making said money.

Am I close? Did I miss it entirely?

He blends aspects of mainstream and more underground hip hop flawlessly. He can easily go from crowd pleasing "bangers" (Backseat Freestyle, King Kunta, Humble) to more introspective, thought provoking songs(momma, Poe Mans Dreams, Vanity Slaves) Hes one of the best writers in hip hop currently, has multiple flows he excels at, and has excellent beat selection. He collaborates with forward thinking artists outside of his genre like Kamasi, Flylo, Thundercat, etc..Hes never made a bad album, and has made 3 of the best hip hop albums of the past decade, with 2 arguably in the top 5 of the decade. He constantly outshines other rappers on their own tracks.

Counterpoint- here is a comprehensive list of things better and less annoying than FJM:

-pan flutes
-killer bees
-lima beans
-falling out of a helicopter
-spontaneous amputation
-sweaty cheese
-sweaty person next to you on public transit
-the American electoral system
-head on car crash
-bicycle seat made out of a cactus
-eyeballs falling out
-toenail salad
-every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light
-a stranger throwing up in your mouth
-1% phone battery
-getting the last seat on the bus then realizing it's because someone peed on it
-turning inside out by accident

I’m just discovering this thread, and up to this point I haven’t bothered to look up who FJM is, but not knowing who we’re talking about didn’t deter me from spitting out a bit of my morning coffee reading this list. No idea why, but “falling out of a helicopter” got me.

Thank you.

Try as a might, I just can't get into the Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen but I think I would like to. What am I doing wrong? I mean I like Sympathy For The Devil, Gimme Shelter, and You Can't Always Get What You Want but the rest just isn't approachable for me. And Bruce, maybe Born In The USA and Dancing In The Dark painted him badly in my eyes as a youth.

I’m in the same boat with the Stones. Though I continually try.

My Bruce recommendation is to listen to Darkness on the Edge of Town in its entirety.

In Rainbows wasn’t nearly as innovative or groundbreaking as OK Computer or Kid A, but to me, it is the most enjoyable and replayable Radiohead album and my personal favorite.

My hot take: Kid A is one of the worst albums I’ve ever made myself listen to multiple times. I just don’t get it. It’s above me evidently. I’ve grown to accept it.
