Jazz

I know they're more in the fusion realm than jazz, but just ran across Sypro Gyra again after having forgotten of their existence for probably twenty years. My uncle who first introduced me to Zappa and Oingo Boingo was a big fan. I remember a lot of people thinking they were corny and there may be something to that as they did nothing for me then either. But the last few days I've streamed some of their albums while working and it works well for that purpose. It doesn't demand serious listening, but occasionally has a song that impresses. Overall I'm finding I appreciate it for what it is a lot more than I ever would have before in my life, and I think it's because I can fade in and out with my focus on it easily without requiring a specific mood to engage it. At times being a lazy listener is nice, and this is fitting that for me.

New/new-to-me jazz records have been accumulating of late. All are now cleaned and I've listened to all but the 5 new releases pictured in the bottom photo. I'm finding Record City Japan to be a great source of jazz I otherwise might never have heard of. I like to peruse their site regularly and check out (via youtube audio) anything that's reasonably priced ($60-ish and under) and looks interesting. I've now purchased about 30 jazz albums from them and condition has been consistently excellent, especially with the Blue Note titles. At this point, it's a lot more fun than waiting to see which titles Blue Note will release within their Tone Poet and Classic series (though still keeping an eye on those!).

A few recents about the upcoming Blue Train Tone Poet. No official announcement "yet"

Latest Speculation is there will be a single Mono Lp release AND and 2LP Stereo with extras release.

and some speculation/discussion here from Mike at The In Groove

Theres quite a few bits confirmed in the vid below:

- Aiming to be released in September for his anniversary.
- AAA Mono and Stereo (2 stereo's as a set with the mono as a separate release)
- PLUS a bonus LP of unreleased recordings.

Starting to dive more into Jazz titles.
Grabbed Coltrane Ballads and Red Out of The Blue with another order to plaid records 🤗

The AS Impulse releases are impressive all around from packaging, vinyl and quality sound. Mostly RTI pressings?

Blue Note is the budget stuff with Tone Poets more aligned with their more premium line it seems.

Surprisingly, not a big price difference between any of these when you catch them on a sale.

For Blue Note my votes are:

Tone Poets
Curtis Amy & Dupree Bolton – Katanga!
Grant Green – Nigeria
Lee Morgan – Cornbread

***I've heard amazing things about Andrew Hill's Passing Ships and there are a lot of these I've not yet checked out.

Classic Vinyl Series
Hank Mobley – Soul Station
Eric Dolphy – Out To Lunch!
Brother Jack McDuff – Moon Rappin'

***I also firmly believe you can never go wrong with any of Jimmy Smith's Blue Note releases

I’ll just try to cite one from each group that should still be available:

Tone Poet: Joe Pass, For Django. I simply cannot get enough of this album.

Verve/Impulse: John Coltrane, A Love Supreme: Live in Seattle. I’ve moved more toward live albums in the past few months and this is a great one if you like this period of Coltrane’s work.

Acoustic Sounds: Bill Evans, Trio 65. My latest acquisition and another live album. I’m an Evans fan and this is proving to be a favorite - I do like it a lot more than Trio 64.

Passing Ships is $30 on plaid right now.

I have Prayer Meetin'
It's a good one. Organ never disappoints

Coltrane's Crescent is a must have , TP's Expansions-McCoy Tyner and Andrew Hill's Passing Ships are fantastic as well, and while you're at it pick up the BBE J-Jazz comps vol 1-3 . Sensational !
I have Crescent and it's nice. Top notch quality.
Sax gets a little hot on the left upon opening but it settles in nicely as it spins.

Here are some recent releases that have been getting repeat spins the first 6 months of the year around here. All should still be available @Jbraswell many if not all via the Plaidroom sale (which ends soon).

Gerald Wilson Big Band - Moment of Truth [Tone Poet]
Brother Jack McDuff - Moon Rappin' [BN Classic]
Joe Henderson - Inner Urge [BN Classic]
Joel Ross - Parable of the Poet [new release]
Immanuel Wilkins - The 7tth Hand [new release]

No argument w/ any of the replies so far, but I’m surprised the AS Gil Evans “Out of the Cool” has not been mentioned. It’s a stunner musically and sonically for me. I only have a few of the AS Prestige, incl Bags Groove, which I recommend. But I just got Booker Ervin’s “Song Book,” and it’s really great.

Also, Impex’s Monk, “Straight No Chaser” is sublime, and I’m about to receive Impex’s Monk’s Dream, which everyone says is also amazing. And consider putting in preorders/backorders on MD for Mofi’s Miles Davis 60s “Classic Quintet” records. They’re unreal, particularly Nefertiti.

I’d look elsewhere. As @Selaws said, waxtime is grey market so probably sourced from a CD rip. I’ll try to give it a listen but this is the pressing I have and remember it sounding good:

I think @zdkaiser is one of the resident Bill experts so he may have some thoughts/recommendations too!
@yukbon , I am not entirely familiar with the Polka Dots and Moonbeams release. Looks to be a rebadged version of Moonbeams. I have the OJC version that @MikeH linked. It is pretty good for the price and is pressed at RTI. Also worth tracking down the OJCs of Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debbie, if you don't have those. Both came out of RTI as well. Not certain if they are completely analog, but the Waltz for Debbie album sounds spectacular to me.
