Jazz

I just received and now am playing my new Acoustic Sounds pressing of The Poll Winners and I must say…

It’s a winner.

If you like this style of jazz, run, don’t walk, to get your copy. I was predisposed to like it as I own two other Poll Winners albums, but even then this one surprised me.

Qobuz hires (96 kHz) sounds really good.
Always fun to see how good the vinyl sounds when it arrives.

Kessel's guitar with the the bass is bluesy and cool sounding.

I had the pleasure of seeing the thunderous Yussef Dayes at Somerset House over the weekend. It was a whole afternoon gig, with Jamilah Barry, Arnelle, Children Of Zeus, and Channel One Sound System opening for him. Really fantastic performances with a load of cold beers, and some fantastic Indo-Chinese Kolkata food beforehand.

A fantastic reissue just arrived from Trunk records. Magician's S/T release.

It's a British jazz fusion record that features Barbara Thompson and initially only sold a handful of copies. Johnny Trunk bought a copy during the lockdown and was able to reissue it (presumably a needle drop).

It's sold out on Trunk records website but a few different outlets have copies. Its limited to 800 copies.

If this is a needle drop, it is the best needle drop I have ever heard and a lot better regardless than many supposedly audiophile records.

Honestly, the sound is so good I can't see it being a needle drop.

Fantastic record, BTW.

Im not sure to be honest but the liner notes read as if it might be. In the past, Johnny Trunk has released needle drops of rarer albums where the tapes arent available so its a possibility.

Like you said though, fantastic quality regardless. The timing is quite poignant as Barbara Thompson sadly passed away over the weekend.

Some interesting Candid reissues that I hadn't seen announced yet (the first 6. I know the others have been announced). I think Bernie cut all these

What makes you say Bernie cut them? Not doubting, just curious, particularly bc I’ve been considering picking up PP’s press of Booker Little “Out Front” but would prefer a much cheaper copy if it sounds good. I don’t care about AAA if vinyl/source/mastering/cutting are otherwise good quality.

That's what the AS newsletter said. Could be wrong though...it's not listed on the Candid site yet.

Yeah the first minute of the needle drop, it's obvious how good this sounds.
The Qobuz sounded great, but Bernie and vinyl take it to another place.
I CANNOT believe this a 1957 recording and AAA 😳

Hopefully they sound good. I had more or less given up on ever finding a decent copy of that Cecil Taylor album after having it on my want list for years, so I think I'll give that one a try at least.
I haven’t heard any reviews of any in this new Candid series, so would be curious if anybody here has gotten any so far? I think I the first batch came out in late May/early June

I thought they pushed out the release of these for some reason. They all still show as preorder at AS and backordered at MD.

I did find this video on first impressions.
