Movies

First half is a 10/10, the back half I’m gonna have to chew on, but golly, what a great theatrical experience this was. 70mm!!!
After chewing on it a while, I can determine that the back half
rules. It becomes a rumination on how history informs culture. Idk how people can say this movie is zionist when the whole final sequence is an ironic silencing. His whole life and body of work have been stolen by the movement he didn't want to be a part of. But that's history baby, you just get carried by the tide. Seen a lot of comparisons to the TAR ending and The Master that I think are fitting.

Having just watched Tár this week for the first time, I can see it.

Watched these so far for the new year.
Probably should have stopped after the 3rd movie. On Stranger Tides was ok. I was disappointed in Ian McShane’s Blackbeard mostly because I was expecting his voice to be more piratey and less Ian.
Dead Men Tell No Tales was just not good. Poorly written, the innuendoes didn’t feel right and Depp’s accent was very off comparatively.
I did enjoy Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa. Probably my favorite character in all of the movies.

90s Essentials movie night with the oldest. 1994 was a phenomenal year for movies.

Dear Fellas. I can't believe how fast things move on the outside. I saw an automobile once when I was a kid, but now they're everywhere. The world went and got itself in a big damn hurry. The parole board got me into this halfway house called the Brewer, and a job bagging groceries at the Food-Way. It's hard work. I try to keep up, but my hands hurt most of the time. I don't think the store manager likes me very much. Sometimes after work I go to the park and feed the birds. I keep thinking Jake might just show up and say hello. But he never does. I hope wherever he is, he's doing okay and making new friends.

I have trouble sleeping at night. I have bad dreams, like I'm falling. I wake up scared. Sometimes it takes me a while to remember where I am. Maybe I should get me a gun and rob the Food-Way, so they'd send me home. I could shoot the manager while I was at it, sort of like a bonus. I guess I'm too old for that sort of nonsense anymore. I don't like it here. I'm tired of being afraid all the time. I've decided not to stay. I doubt they'll kick up any fuss. Not for an old crook like me.

It really was. I go back to Nobody's Fool quite often, and it's about time for a rewatch of Pulp Fiction.

Forrest Gump is entertaining enough but for that to win Best Picture over Pulp Fiction or Shawshank, while not surprising given the academies history; was still a bit of a stretch.

I was in 6th grade in 1993 and it was the first year I actually cared about the Oscars. Me my buds absolutely loved Pulp Fiction and were very disappointed that it lost.

I have a weird relationship with Forrest Gump. At the time, I loved it. Upon rewatches, it's hard not to notice all the things people point out about the movie. It will be interesting both to rewatch it for myself and to see what it looks like to today's 17 year olds (my daughter). I was 18 when I saw it. I completely understand the reason it won Best Picture and Hanks won Best Actor. It hit the nostalgia bone of Academy voters about the times of their lives that were the high points of their youth. It's a perfect nostalgia piece. The Academy was never going to give Best Picture to Pulp Fiction. It was too outside what was then the mainstream.

I think our next watches will be Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction. Stranglely, I never saw Quiz Show and I feel like I should since I love Ralph Fiennes.

If you haven't seen Nobody's Fool with Paul Newman, that might be my favorite of all those '94 films. He's great in that one with a solid supporting cast.

Quiz Show is outstanding. Excellent cast, John Turturro and Rob Morrow. Probably my favorite Robert Redford directed film.
