Political Discussion

My 29 year old daughter and I went away this past weekend. Of course, politics came up as we had about 5 hours together in the car. She told me that her main issue is women's rights. Her second issue is wealth inequality. I've no idea if that's the status quo for her age group, but it seems to be for her friend group.

There are some great clips online of Colin Allred shoving Ted Cruz in a locker during their debate last night in Dallas. It ultimately probably won't matter and the utter dumbasses in this state who give into hysteria over transgender athletes will still vote for him but it was nice for someone to make that smarmy asshole look uncomfortable. If you vote for that asshole, you're really just voting for the R next to his name because I can't think of a single person who likes Ted Cruz or can explain a single thing he's done for this state.

What do we all think of this situation?

One of the federal governments biggest diastase relief programs buys out your house and property so that you can relocate to a new area that isn't flood prone for example.

The issue with this is, most people in Asheville NC will not consider this an option and think it's laughable. They don't want to relocate, they want to rebuild. And there is a lot of anger and resentment that this is the type of aid being offered to them.

The idea of this relief, is to get people out of areas that are prone to disasters. There is no reason why we should fill in the washed out areas the rivers claimed in Asheville and reclaim the land to build on again. Yet that's exactly what the locals want to do.

Asheville isn’t a disaster prone area though, so it’s a bad solution there?

Makes sense in Florida or even Boone, but Asheville was considered a climate change haven until stupid storm hit after a week of constant rainfall.

I’d say it was a freak incident BUT climate change means these kind of freak incidents will be more
Common.

Agreed on Asheville not being a good place for that solution. I think rebuilding on the coast of Florida or in a wildfire prone area of California is more where that solution should be the case.

Marketplace had an interesting segment on how Zillow is now listing homes by their possible impact due to climate change.

It’s funny because the politico article talks about Buncombe being deeply red (unsure on that, pretty sure Asheville at least isn’t, but that’s besides the point). They’re skeptical of the government and incredulous about climate change.

Trump wants to gut FEMA, is pretty anti-regulation, and does not want to invest in infrastructure. His policy platforms and history are a direct fuck you to the people that support him.

Also, evidently some storm three years ago caused Pigeon River to flood and that may be why the area is considered disaster prone now.

In an era when every storm seems to be a once in a century storm… where exactly are we all going to move to when FEMA buys our shit?
