Political Discussion

I do believe life begins at conception.
The Christian beliefs I hold true to heart are that all life is valued.
So that's why I will never have abortion as a plan, and neither does my wife.

But, I also believe church and state should be no where near each other, and I'm appalled that a lot of so called "christians" support Trump.
I also believe the government is for the people by the people.
They should be in the interest of all, therefore laws should be placed for all.
Not everyone has the same beliefs I do, and I know that.
Your convictions are not the same as mine.
I respect your beliefs. I'm not religious so that is a hard aspect for me to discuss. But I whole heartedly agree that church and state should not mix. The Pledge of Allegiance even makes me uncomfortable. I'm so glad I didn't have my firm view about the separation of church and state until long after elementary school where we had to say it daily.

I don't think the "christians" that support Trump are truly christians though, are they? He has too much hate in his soul to really be one himself.

As a former evangelical (currently unsure), this is something I respect. If you don’t agree with abortion, then don’t have one, but don’t tell anyone else they can’t.

I see people calling others ‘far left’, ‘far right’, ‘centrists’, etc. First, the ‘center’ has moved so far right, as a former Republican, I don’t even recognize the GOP anymore. It’s basically become the modern day KKK, and even moderate Republicans are being called ‘leftists’, ‘socialists’, and the like.

I consider myself left of center. I think we need borders, but also should make it easier to become a citizen. People should be able to own guns reasonable for personal protection or game hunting, but not for mass casualty. Gun control should be nationally equal, forget the states having individual laws.

I am terrified of what we’ve become as a country, or rather what’s come out of the closet. Christians hide behind their Christianity to get away with despicable acts towards anyone not Christian, and the one Republican with the courage to call out our current administration for their hypocrisy (Justin Amash) gets shunned by the rest of his party.

I have more to say, just am too exhausted to continue....

The main reason Christians follow republican is because of gay marriage and abortion... they’re willing to blindly follow a terrible leader for that! And I think that’s a terrible trade off.
As a Christian and a Christ follower i am called to serve and be humble and love others because we were also loved. Love God above all else, and love your neighbor, the greatest biblical commandments. Fighting for those who are meek, low in spirit, culturally and socially poor, and those who are misunderstood.
The biggest problem America faces is greed, selfishness, and pride. All other problems can be traced to that. And if a “Christian” follows that, they’re going against their own so called beliefs.

I'm on my phone so a longer response will have to wait.

I don't agree that abortion is murder. But I do agree with you that it is a health issue, not a moral issue. I also agree with you about assisted suicide.

I don't agree that the bill of rights says gun control is not up for discussion. It is not that clear cut. The 2nd amendment has the phrase "well regulated militia". And there are various schools of thought when trying to interpret what is meant. Do we read the constitution and amendments as the founding fathers wrote them in their circumstances? (Scalia supported this view of the constitution). Or do we interpret them as a document that is to adapt to society as it moves into the future? The assault rifles of today are vastly different than the muskets of then. So there is still a lot to debate there.

I don't want a gun. I don't want the power to hurt someone in that way. I've been gay bashed plenty and still do not think a gun would have helped the situation. I'll take the stitches and black eye and ptsd over harming someone with a gun every single day of the week.

I think there is a mid point between banning ALL THE GUNS and allowing ALL THE GUNS. As much as I loath guns, I'd be pretty darn happy to get to that mid point.

I, too, agree with getting rid of borders but whoo, boy, that would take a shift in a ton of people's thinking to get there. I do not think everyone that came to this country "illegally" should be considered illegal. We need to treat people better. We need to close those camps and figure this out another way. We need to stop these mass raids and deportations. There are people dying because of it.

We agree on things. We build on that. And we can respectfully talk out where we disagree. :)
Just to be clear I was taking very few personal stances. I was providing the actual answers of a general population to the questions you asked. I was not actually inviting debate on the merits of the answers. I’ll happily debate my personal stances, though.

I'm going to be 55 this year and these old guys need to move on, they can't help it, they're out of touch even if they don't think so. Their PC filter was never installed and common sense has left the building. I'm in favor of, and think it's time, for a younger government.

Whole heartedly agree.

I find it funny that there is a pause between saying white kids and the rest of the groups he mentions. Like he realized and had to add on a bunch of groups for cover. Also its ridiculous that he simultaneously offends POC and poor white people. This guy will never be quick witted enough to beat Trump. He'll run him over like a steam roller. He makes too many mistakes that he'll have to back pedal on.

He's pretty much guaranteeing 4 more years of what we have now, isn't he?

I don't think so man, I think Joe wins. I know polls are mostly meaningless thanks to the last presidential election but I find it hard to believe anyone not named Hillary Clinton won't be able to beat Trump. I mean I've seen polls that has Joe leading in Texas and North Carolina. If he wins those states, then Trump doesn't have a prayer.

Biden sucks ass and has a not-even-remotely-veiled contempt for young people and no desire whatsoever to do anything about climate change or health care. He has no substantive policies apart from maintaining the status quo. Fuck Joe Biden. If he wins the primary the Democrats will get what they deserve and wonder yet again why young people are disenfranchised.

Although joe as pres is in no way ideal, it is better than the current status quo. So I hope you're right.

The more he's in the news, the more I want him to shut up. He is turning off his own voter base. That comment yesterday is him. He IS white male privilege. And that is not attractive to well, most anyone that isn't a white male.

But I dunno. Hopefully everyone that "just couldn't vote for Hillary so didn't vote at all" has learned that lesson, will pinch their nose and vote this time.

This drives me absolutely freekin' crazy, vote for SOMEBODY for the love of god. By not voting you've given up your right to choose a leader, and in doing so, your right to complain about that leader after they've won. 😖
