Political Discussion

And thus why progressivism is years, maybe a decade away from even being close to a reality.

It depends on what can be done with the senate in 24... but the grassroots movement in Texas is incredibly cool to see. If progressive politics wins it’ll be because of Texas and we’ll have Beto to thank (even if he’s not got the most progressive stance, it’s certainly progressive for his state.)

Maybe, but that's not to say the right candidate running on a progressive platform could win in 2024. Democrats will have to come up with some policy to get people excited to vote for them other than "not Trump" next time.

For the record, Biden would have also gotten destroyed had covid not happened this year. Sheer luck.
The country keeps changing too. The younger and more diverse the electorate will hasten the openness to a progressive agenda. Less than a decade ago Gay Marriage wasn’t legal and weed was only available medically. Now 10 years later very few have an issue with either of these once hot buttoned issues. 4 years is a long time. There will be growing pains but ultimately a more Liberal and Progressive electorate will lead the country forward.

As long as rural areas have their wealth, jobs and home ownership nothing is going to change.

Their bubble is going to take a generation or more longer to burst than metro areas where the cost of living is unsustainable for the middle class.

Home values are still cheap enough in much of rural america where non college educated young 20 something can easily become homeowners, and accumulate their wealth in their property. Buying low and selling high is still a think

In metro / suburban areas the cost of homes are very high. Many younger people in their 20's and 30's can't afford home ownership and rent. And that's only going to get worse. Within the next generation or so there will not be enough people to buy houses being bought today sold high later. Accumulation of wealth through property ownership is coming to an end within a generation. And possible much sooner know because of COVID-19.

We have to wait for the bubble burst in rural america to really see any kind of change fundamentally of being more approving of anything progressive.

I'm not so sure.

Texas now admits they were wrong. They were expecting that all first time voters / new voter registrations would be democrat this year. The opposite was True. The data now shows that the majority were republican. Much of it is attributed to young blue collar workers from rural areas fearing the blue wave from the more populous areas.

Hearing about a potential blue wave really fires up and motivates the right. A lot of these new voter registrations were to make sure the right stays in control.

Josh Marshall at TPM had a good post a few weeks ago about how we shouldn't be buying into using the language of court "packing," which is a pejorative term with negative connotations. He likened it to "estate taxes" being branded as "death taxes" by their opponents. The proposal on the left was about court reform that included expansion of the SC. Only one party has been "packing" the judiciary.

there are a lot of ideas out there regarding court reform that are pretty good. They do t involve adding new members. I think I heard it on the Left right and center podcast.

Something I thought about. Trump will hopefully be exposed as a fraud and a loser. What happens to his supporters when his house of cards comes crashing down? His support will not remain at over 70m people. Poll everyone again next year if he's in jail or has fallen off hard, and he won't have 70m people.

Trump has never lost something on this scale before. He's been a "winner" his whole life. His supporters like winners and hate losers. He's going to become quickly powerless to do anything other than just screaming into the void.

GOPers probably come back into the fold. They crazy Trump base may not go back over to the GOP, they may branch off. Do Independent, middle-of-the-road voters come back over to Biden? Since Biden is basically a republican, Biden may be a candidate they can get behind.

I don't know what point I'm trying to make. Trump's support maybe overinflated right now. It should come back down and those voters will need somewhere to go. Dems should embrace working class voters and try and siphon off some of the very casual Trump supporters who Trump was able to support way back in 2016 with all of his broken promises about jobs and manufacturing, etc.

Yeah, it's hard to say if Trump's cult of personality was unique unto itself and will be able to be recreated. Hard to say at this point.

The gap is getting considerably more narrow, and no matter how you look at it, that’s a very good thing (especially with that giant electoral). I suspect that if the gap continues to close then the republican party will need to put up a Texan presidential candidate.

The gap for the last 4 elections has been
12%
16%
9%
6%

That’s only 6%! It’s doable!

I am convinced once the boomers die that America will be like Western Europe.

So today don jrs twitter is even more erratic than his dads. He called his daddy to go into "total war" over this election. Where did i hear ghat before?🤔

Oh. My. God.

My whole workplace is abuzz about the watermarked ballot sting operation that is going to turn this election into a Trump landslide. I'm on an island here, with one other sane coworker. They are calling Trump a genius, and saying 'got him!' about Biden.

I kind of want to quit.

What’s this new conspiracy?
