Vinyl Me Please Classics

"Later this fall, VMP Classics will offer the first vinyl reissue of Star People, appearing as a 2LP set for the first time. The VMP vinyl reissue was remastered from the original analog tape masters by Mark Wilder and supervised by producer Steve Berkowitz."

Giving Afro a spin and it sounds awesome. I have complained in the past about RKS’s mastering and how he sometimes softens and removes too much “edge” in his cuts. But his approach is perfect for this recording. I imagine that a KG cut of this would be painful to listen to.

Flat and dead quiet. It’s a great pressing and a great pick for the Classics series.

I'm glad to hear that. I've been contemplating grabbing it, but I've only streamed the album. I like the music, but those highs are piercing; it's almost painful to listen to. I may give the vinyl a shot next month.

To be fair, the highs ARE piercing even on this pressing. But they’re not unbearable on my system. Your mileage may vary depending on your set up.

pretty sure Mark Wilder does everything in digital....so I bet this was cut from Mark's DSD remaster...not that it matters, the dude knows miles and everything sounds really good

No they said it's AAA, mostly likely a copy tape. It's being cut by Ryan Smith. I think the article is incorrect, unless Wilder was the one who made the dub.

very possible...and I might be wrong, but I thought Wilder basically took the whole of Miles catalog and did the definitive DSD masters from which all things spring...but happy to be wrong on this one...but anything Miles is worth questioning really hard if there is a digital step

also, I don't really give a F if there is a digital step, I've been buying the recent Sony stuff from Japan and think its fantastic and those are absolutely cut from digital.

Wilder is also the one who does dub tapes for Sony when other labels want to reissue records AAA. It’s more likely that Wilder did a copy tape dub for RKS to cut from on this one. It’s a way less popular album if Miles’ so they were probably fine to run the tape to make a dub. I think you’re right about DSD for the other major albums though. Sorcerer for VMP was a digital source

Spinning Shape of Jazz right now and it’s a very good sounding pressing. I’ll have to try to compare to the stereo ORG. It sounds way better than an OG mono that I used to have, if memory serves me right. Charlie Haden’s bass sounds fantastic. The unison playing between Don Cherry and Ornette is pretty well defined and doesn’t blur like I thought it might. I still think the stereo version might be better with the separation of interplay between the horns but I’m definitely happy to have this mono pressing.

I agree. I’m on the second side right now and I’m loving this pressing. I’ve only ever heard this album in stereo so it’s cool hearing it in this format.

And it doesn’t feel overcrowded to me at all. It feels suitably chaotic where it’s supposed to but it never is claustrophobic.

Got mine yesterday, very excited to give it a spin soon. I’ve never listened to it before tbh. Saw some really stellar reviews when logging it on Discogs which is great to see.
